8th Grade World Geography Syllabus
Mr. Dopp [email protected]
The content that will be covered in 8th Grade Social Studies will directly incorporate the Minnesota Social Studies Academic Standards. We will begin the year by studying a variety of different general geographic concepts relating to both physical and cultural geography. As the year progresses, we will then build on those early concepts and apply them directly as we study different cultural and physical regions of the world. We will discuss and learn about current topics through a once per week look at the top headlines in the news as well.
Homework:
Students will be required to complete 1 current event per week. These must be typed and turned in through Google Classroom. They MUST include a source, a brief summary, and a personal reaction to the story. The only limitation on student’s topics concerns sports; NO SPORTS TOPICS! Students should expect additional homework as content requires, including studying for tests/quizzes. Brief quizzes will occur each Friday and will cover very broad topics from the week. These do not require a great amount of studying and will be easily managed by students paying attention during the week. I will use Cornerstone to push out e-mail alerts as each assignment or long term project is underway.
Minnesota History Day
The largest activity students will see is the Minnesota History Day project. Students will choose a topic in the fall, they will research this topic and create a website, video, essay, skit, or presentation board to display learning. Students will be very busy with this project between November and February.
